SKLZ Speed Gates vs Sprintbrick

SKLZ Speed Gates are the cheapest branded timing gates we found, and they give you one time per run. For $50 more, Sprintbrick gives you every split and your top speed.

What SKLZ sells

SKLZ makes two versions. The original Speed Gates were $129.99 and timed up to 20 yards from a flying start. Speed Gates Pro, at $149.99, has four wireless sensors and a console and times a start and a finish up to 50 yards apart. Both give you one time per run, from the start gate to the finish gate.

What Sprintbrick adds

Sprintbrick has no gates. You wear a sensor on your lower back and set a receiver about 2 m behind the start. It measures the distance to you 100 times a second, so one rep gives you splits at 10, 20, 30 and 40 yards and every 10 m out to 100 m, your top speed, your fastest flying 10, 20 and 30 m, and a speed chart for the whole run.

We check it against OVR gates. Past the first 10 m, all 30 Sprintbrick segments came within 50 ms; times that include the start agree less well, and we're still working on that. See the full results.

Which to choose

If all you want is a 20 or 40-yard time and you have a group taking turns, SKLZ Speed Gates Pro does that for less money, and anyone can run through them without wearing anything.

If you want to know why the time came out the way it did, you need splits. A 4.9 s 40 with a slow first 10 yards needs different work from a 4.9 with a fade at the end. Sprintbrick shows you which one you ran.
